It was a mindfuck. In a good way. There is no background, no real tie to it, but there doesn't need to be. Everything is said well in a few lines of genuinely disturbing and well-written narration. Dialogue brings a character to life, lets the reader hear, see, smell, and taste their whole life with only a few lines. It is a creepy painting done only with broad strokes of a brush that somehow leaves enough vagueness that every reader is forced to fill in the blanks, handed a roadmap with beginning and end blanked out and only a route in the middle highlighted, forcing them to pick their own path and destination.
This is the sort of thing that will niggle in the back of my mind, forcing me awake in the middle of the night to wonder what had happened, what will happen, and where, Dear God, do I have to go to avoid that fate.
Masterfully done, Cate. My hat is off to you, madam.

And WOW! JC what a review.
Wow, deliciously creepy! Very good story!
Very nicely written, I loved the imagery of the worm, for some reason it just gave the whole story flavor...like a good tequila ;)
Anyhow, it was a good read, keep it up
Thanks KC & Alex
